Whether you're saving for a down payment, a car or an emergency fund, turning the goal into a clear monthly amount is the key step. The tool works both ways: from deposit to result, and from goal to required deposit.
If your savings earn nothing, leave the return at 0%.
How it works
- Deposits are assumed at the end of each month, with monthly compounding.
- Future value = growth of current savings + growth of monthly deposits.
- The required deposit inverts the formula: (goal − grown current savings) ÷ deposit factor.
Formulas
FV = P × (1+i)^n + D × ((1+i)^n − 1) ÷ iRequired D = (goal − P × (1+i)^n) × i ÷ ((1+i)^n − 1)i = annual return ÷ 12, n = months
Worked examples
100 a month at 6% for 10 years
You deposit 12,000 and end with 16,387.93, so growth is 4,387.93.
A 50,000 goal in 4 years with no return
You need to save 50,000 ÷ 48 ≈ 1,041.67 a month.
