Formulas by calculation type
- X% of Y = X ÷ 100 × Y.
- X is what % of Y = X ÷ Y × 100.
- Change from A to B = (B − A) ÷ |A| × 100. Positive is an increase, negative a decrease.
- Y increased by X% = Y × (1 + X ÷ 100); use a negative X to decrease.
- Original number when X is P% of it = X ÷ (P ÷ 100).
Worked examples
Percent of a number
15% of 200 = 30.
Percentage change
A price rising from 80 to 100 is a +25% change. Falling from 100 to 80 is −20%, because the base is different.
Original number
If 30 is 15% of a number, the number is 200.
Frequently asked questions
Why is it +25% one way and −20% the other?
Change is measured from the first value. A difference of 20 is 25% of 80 but 20% of 100.
What if the first value is zero?
Percentage change from zero is undefined, and you'll see a message saying so.
Can I type Arabic digits?
Yes, Arabic-Indic digits (١٢٣) and the Arabic decimal separator are accepted.
