Shop owners, accountants and shoppers often need the VAT inside an invoice or price. A common mistake is taking 15% of the gross price; the correct way is dividing by 1.15.
Pick the operation and rate to see the net price, VAT amount and gross price.
How it works
- Adding VAT: VAT = price × rate; gross = price + VAT.
- Removing VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate); VAT = the difference.
- Values are rounded to two decimals as on invoices.
Formulas
VAT = price × rNet = gross ÷ (1 + r)r = rate ÷ 100
Worked examples
Adding 15%
A net price of 100 becomes 115, with 15 VAT.
Removing 15% from 115
115 ÷ 1.15 = 100 and VAT is 15. Note that 115 × 15% = 17.25, a common mistake.
Removing 5% from 1,050
1,050 ÷ 1.05 = 1,000 and VAT is 50.
