Why does a 1 TB drive show up as only 931 GB on your computer? Because there are two systems: decimal, used by manufacturers, and binary, used by operating systems. This tool shows values in both.
Units and the two systems
- A byte (B) = 8 bits.
- Decimal (SI): kilobyte kB = 1000 bytes, megabyte MB = 1000 kB, and so on.
- Binary (IEC): kibibyte KiB = 1024 bytes, mebibyte MiB = 1024 KiB, and so on.
- Bit units (kb, Mb, Gb) are used for internet speeds and are 8 times smaller than byte units.
Key values

Worked examples
A 1 TB drive
1 TB = 10¹² bytes = 931.32 GiB, which Windows displays as “GB”.
GB to MB
1 GB = 1000 MB, while 1 GiB = 1024 MiB.
Frequently asked questions
Is a kilobyte 1000 or 1024 bytes?
Under international standards kB = 1000 bytes and KiB = 1024 bytes, though some systems still write KB for 1024.
Which system does my phone use?
It depends: recent Apple systems use decimal; Windows uses binary with GB labels.
Why can't I enter negative values?
Data size can't be negative.
