How long does a 100 GB game take on a 200 Mbps line? When will a video upload finish? This tool answers precisely, handling the confusing difference between bits and bytes.

Real throughput is usually below the advertised speed, so you can set an efficiency (e.g. 80%) for a more realistic estimate.

How it works

  1. The file size is converted to bits: 1 byte = 8 bits, 1 MB = 8,000,000 bits (or 8 × 1024² for binary MiB).
  2. The speed is converted to bits per second and multiplied by the efficiency.
  3. Time in seconds = file size in bits ÷ effective bits per second.

Formula

  • Time = (size × 8) ÷ (speed × efficiency)
  • 1 Mbps = 1,000,000 bits/s; 1 MB/s = 8 Mbps

Worked examples

1 GB at 100 Mbps

1 GB = 8,000 megabits ÷ 100 = 80 seconds in theory, or 100 seconds at 80% efficiency.

4.7 GB at 10 MB/s

4,700 ÷ 10 = 470 seconds: 7 minutes 50 seconds.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my download slower than my plan?

Plans are sold in bits, not bytes, and servers, Wi-Fi, congestion and protocols all reduce throughput. 70–90% efficiency is common.

Mbps vs MB/s?

Mbps is megabits per second; MB/s is megabytes per second, eight times larger.

Does this test my connection?

No, it calculates time from the speed you enter. A real speed test is a separate tool we plan to add.
