Zakat is one of the pillars of Islam. On money, gold, silver and trade goods it is one-fortieth (2.5%) once wealth reaches the nisab and a full Hijri year has passed.

Enter today's gold and silver prices per gram, then your assets. The calculator adds up your zakatable wealth, deducts debts due, compares the total with the nisab and shows the zakat due in your currency, or in grams if you pay in gold.

How it works

  1. Gold of each karat is converted to pure gold: weight × karat ÷ 24, then multiplied by the 24k price per gram.
  2. Silver, cash, savings, shares held for trading, stock at today's selling value and money owed to you are added.
  3. Debts you owe that are due now are deducted, giving your zakatable wealth.
  4. Nisab = 85 g of pure gold or 595 g of silver, at the price you entered.
  5. If the wealth reaches the nisab, zakat = wealth × 2.5%.
  6. If you enter the date you reached the nisab, we add one Umm al-Qura Hijri year to show when zakat falls due.

Formulas

  • Pure gold = weight × karat ÷ 24
  • Wealth = cash + gold + silver + trade goods + receivables + shares − debts due
  • Nisab = 85 × gold price per gram, or 595 × silver price per gram
  • Zakat = wealth × 0.025 (if at or above nisab)

85 g equals 20 mithqal and 595 g equals 200 dirhams, the common modern estimate.

Worked examples

Cash savings

100,000 with gold at 400 per gram: the nisab is 85 × 400 = 34,000. The wealth reaches it, so zakat is 100,000 × 2.5% = 2,500.

Gold of mixed karats

120 g of 21k and 40 g of 18k is 105 + 30 = 135 g of pure gold. At 400 per gram it is worth 54,000; zakat is 1,350, or 3.375 g of pure gold.

A trader with debts

Cash 20,000, 1,000 g of silver at 5, stock 15,000, receivables 5,000, shares 10,000 and debts due 8,000. Total 55,000, net 47,000, zakat 1,175.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use the gold or the silver nisab?

Paper money is measured against one of the two metals. Many modern bodies use the gold nisab; others rule for the lower of the two (usually silver) as it benefits the poor more and is more cautious. The calculator offers all three.

Is zakat due on jewelry a woman wears?

Scholars differ. The Hanafis require it, as did Saudi Arabia's Permanent Committee, Ibn Baz and Ibn Uthaymeen; most Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali scholars do not for permitted jewelry in regular use. Turn on the jewelry option if you follow the first view.

What is the hawl? Is it a lunar year?

The hawl is a full Hijri year (about 354–355 days) during which the wealth stays at or above the nisab. If you use the Gregorian year for convenience, apply 2.577% instead of 2.5% to cover the extra days.

Do I deduct all my debts?

The calculator deducts the debts due that you enter. Scholars differ on long-term debts such as a mortgage; a common modern view is to deduct only the current year's instalments, so enter the amount you follow.

How do I pay zakat on shares?

Shares bought for trading are zakatable at market value on your zakat date, like trade goods. For long-term holdings many scholars zakat the company's zakatable assets per share; check the company's disclosure or ask a scholar.

Does it fetch the gold price automatically?

No. Enter today's price from a gold dealer or bank; prices change by the hour and we won't show a price that may be stale.
