The Hijri calendar is used for official documents and religious occasions, the Gregorian calendar for international and modern systems, so people often need an exact conversion: a birth date on an ID, a contract date or an event.

This tool relies on the Umm al-Qura calendar as built into modern browsers rather than an approximate formula, and conversion in either direction always round-trips to the same date.

How conversion works

  1. Gregorian to Hijri: the matching Hijri date is read directly from the Umm al-Qura calendar data in your browser.
  2. Hijri to Gregorian: we estimate the Gregorian day, then search for the day whose Hijri date matches exactly.
  3. If you enter day 30 of a 29-day Hijri month, you are told the date does not exist instead of getting a wrong answer.

Umm al-Qura is a pre-computed astronomical calendar. The start of Ramadan, Shawwal and Dhu al-Hijjah is announced by moon sighting and may differ by one day. Some countries use other Hijri calendars.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the result sometimes differ from a printed calendar or a moon-sighting announcement?

Printed calendars in some countries use other calculations, and sighting announcements can be a day earlier or later than Umm al-Qura. We follow Umm al-Qura and say so clearly.

How many days are in a Hijri month?

29 or 30. The tool shows the length of the Hijri month your date falls in.

Can I convert very old dates?

We support AH 1300 to 1600 (about 1882 to 2174 CE), the range of the official Umm al-Qura tables. Outside it results would be approximate, so we don't show them.
